My responses to moms when asked the weight.

"Your guess is as good as mine...statistically speaking:" "I've never been off by more than 5 pounds"

Seems to get the point across that its really a crap shoot

No doubt, I get them wrong all the time, (by 2 to 400 gm) but what I am saying is that I am unlikely to say "this baby is average size" when in fact it is "BIG".

I am amazed that you would be amazed that an experienced obstetrician could underestimate the size of a baby. I would guess that if you were to write down your extimated fetal weight on your next 50 deliveries that at least one of them would be off by more than 500 grams. And it only takes one to have someone second guess your decision.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
