The history of cesarean technique*1
Samuel Lurie MD and Marek Glezerman MD
>From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Edith Wolfson Medical Received 7 January 2003; revised 23 April 2003; accepted 30 June 2003. ; Available online 29 December 2003. Abstract Cesarean section has been practiced since ancient times. Unfortunately, no ancient medical documents describing the techniques for cesarean section are extant. In the early medieval period, cesarean section was usually performed by midwifes. One of the first explicit instructions in medical literature on cesarean technique dates from about 1480 from southern Germany. We discuss the evolution of cesarean surgical technique and point up the contribution of many giants in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, such as Blundell, Frank, Harris, Joel-Cohen, Kehrer, Kerr, Lebas, Levret, Maylard, Pfannenstiel, Porro, Portes, and Sanger. Author Keywords: Cesarean section; history of medicine

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
