La libbra è un'unità di misura di massa o peso di origine romana. Il nome deriva dal latino libra ("bilancia").=scale

La libbra ha avuto valori differenti in diversi paesi ed epoche; attualmente è ancora in uso nel Regno Unito(United Kingdom) e in altri paesi anglosassoni(U.S.A.-Namibia) la libbra inglese (pound, abbreviazione lb), con un valore pari a 453,59237 grammi, ma non fa parte del sistema internazionale. Sottomultiplo della libbra è l'oncia (ounce): una libbra è pari a 16 once.

Da Carlo Magno in avanti la parola libra denotò anche una moneta. L'uso di unità di peso come unità monetarie (es. una libbra d'oro o una libbra d'argento) era comune nel mondo antico. Da questa moneta deriva il nome lira. In inglese tuttora la stessa parola pound indica sia la libbra che la sterlina, il cui simbolo £ deriva dalla lettera L.
