agree! the OR shouldnt shut down just because the robot blew a fuse. the gyn surgeon needs to be well trained in vaginal, straight stick, robotics, and yes, open procedures.

that said, its time we realize that the gyn of old really is represented by three distinct skill sets. gyn surgery has little to do with obstetrics; what makes one a great office practioner may have little carry over into the operating room. financially, you can make more per hour in the office. at $850 for a hyst(any route) i am not making overhead staying in the OR.
