Re: Male partner association with anembryonic gestation

Glen,

Unfortunately, based on available data, this is likely an unfortunate coincidence. With the spontaneous loss rate approaching 25%, this unfortunate series of events is certainly possible. For several years out of training, I routinely obtained both maternal and paternal karyotypes of parents who lost three consecutive first trimester pregnancies - never found one abnormal. Because of my experience, as well as that in the literature, I have stopped checking, which saves a couple about $1,000.

Just my thoughts,

Lynn

I am seeing a couple that I just diagnosed with an anembryonic gestation (blighted ovum) with a gestational sac measuring 6+5 wks without yolk sac or fetal pole. hCG was 79K now 77K.

She gives the history that her husband has had two previous partners that have gotten pregnant and have also had anembryonic gestations. This now makes his third female partner to experience such a loss. Is there any connection between male factors and anembryonic gestations? Would chromosomal testing of him be warranted with that history?

Thanks,

Glen
