Dispute means higher malpractice rates for PA docsFrom: GIN11153@aol.comThu Apr 3 13:03:37 2008
High-risk specialties--neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and obstetrics--may soon have to pay an additional $15,000 for malpractice insurance in Pennsylvania because of a political dispute over healthcare. Until now, the state's physicians have received help with insurance through a government program that Governor Ed Rendell has supported. But he refuses to approve the assistance again unless progress is made on separate legislation that would extend coverage to the uninsured, which state Republicans oppose. This may be nothing more than theatrics from politicians who know the entire nation is watching in the run-up to the state's high-profile primary election. Let's see if they can compromise after April 22. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, March 28, 2008 Pennsylvnia Gov. Ed Rendell has sent a letter to the state's doctors saying they will have to pay more for their medical malpractice insurance because no agreement has been reached on legislation to extend healthcare coverage to the uninsured. Rendell has championed payment reductions for doctors through the state's MCare abatement program, but has refused to approve them unless progress is made on affordable health insurance. Rendell said that if an agreement is reached, doctors could receive refunds of their abatement costs. _Full Story_ (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08088/868664-85.stm) available here: _http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08088/868664-85.stm_ (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08088/868664-85.stm) Gail

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
