dysplasia - alt optionFrom: Anne Schnedl (aschnedl@gmail.com)Sat Mar 15 22:09:28 2008
Dear Dr. Bulley (and other listmates) - If your patient is interested in "alternative" non-invasive (and uterus preserving!) options, you may consider suggesting RMA (red marine algae). There is no evidence this will help ... it has not been studied, certainly not in this context. It has been used by some as an alternative/adjuvent Rx for HSV - I have a friend who has used it for that purpose, and I used it myself for peri-ungal warts (around my fingernails) that had been refractory to cryo, chemo (injections of bleomycin), and laser. I tried it figuring HSV is a virus, HPV is a virus ... who knows if there might be some "cross-sensitivity" so to speak. Anecdotally, it does seem to be some kind of immune modulator. Not something I would recommend or use in someone who is pregnant or might become pregnant. I would dearly love to have this studied in a double-blind, placebo controlled context w/bad paps, but I'm not holding my breath, as this would be a very long and very expensive study!! I would suggest 2gm/day for at least 2 months - that's what I did. I divided the dose and took 1gm in the am, 1gm in the pm; It is farily expensive - I took it almost 10 years ago, and I think I spent $100-$150/month on it.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
