Both Excel and Visiport are Ethicon products. The Excel trocars have spring loaded blades. The Visiport trocars have the little plastic wings at the tip, and the scope goes right inside of it so that you watch on monitor as the tip penetrates all the layers.

I use the visiport all the time now. I can attest to the fact that if you have a piece of bowel adherent right under the umbilicus The visiport gives you a nice view of the bowel lumen.

I agree with you Garry. It would take a major study powered to show the difference in injury rates. Perhaps you could study laparoscopies done on patients with previous midline incisions.

Right now, I tend to prefer the Visiport, but if the scrub tech opens Excels by mistake, I don't throw 'em all out. I usually open a Verres needle and proceed. Surgery is dangerous business, but if it's done for a good reason and patients are well informed, we each take calculated risks that are actually quite low.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
