Re: Family practice and OB

Dan,

There are only 3 other Ob/Gyns in the community. One I'm sharing an office with and he feels that he is taken advantage of by the lack of communication with the FPs. The other two, as best I can tell, don't like the situation either. Unfortunately for all of us, the FP are the larger group and seem to speak the loudest. I just think the Ob/Gyns here haven't pushed the issue.

I would like to see the FPs practice somewhat like the hospital based midwives in the community do. There are two of them and they both belong to the practice of the other two Obs. If the FPs would just pick a group or groups to consult with, I would be fine with it. When Dr Jones has a patient in labor, she calls me. When Dr Smith has a patient in labor, he calls the other OB group. I know how the FPs I cover practice and shouldn't be surprised by anything. I think the other way is not at all how EMTALA call is designed or meant to be and is being abused.

I knew there were FPs doing OB here, but I didn't know how they managed c/s in labor.

Happy New Year!

Glen

Welcome Glen.It is good to hear from you again. I find myself in the unusual position of agreeing with both Joe P and EL. They have given you excellent advice. Do the other OB's have a problem with this? What is your problem with it?

Do you just want to be consulted as opposed to being called in to be a technician instead of a consultant? ???? Did you know this before you got there??

welcome back, to the World, though some would disagree with Alaska :-)-O

I suggest you wait a while before you start making major waves, and, from my own experience, if you do, go in heavy, shock and awe, shysters blazing.

My friend google shows me in http://www.emtala.com/dollard.htm that EMTALA does not apply to admitted patients.

I would in this case, go to the MPS, my malpractice carrier, ask them for advice and directions and would do exactly as they say from then on, not only

to be covered, but also, because they give very good advice (they are non- profit).

greetings, el

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
