Given the fact CA 125 is pretty useless in precise differentiation of malignant from benign, its not too useful, IMHO, to get too excited about pattern recognition ultrasound studies, which still leave one with about as much precise preop/pre path report data, as some good clinical judgment and patient hx....until some better biochemical/molecular biology tools are achieved, studies like this rankle me a bit....the US is already the best in the world about spending scads of money on expensive technology of limited benefit. If researchers want to research, well, yeah, great...that's what we to be done. But its a bit early to start proselytizing for "....sonologists to be be given more training...to maximize the benefits of the technique"....the "technique" is unlikely to ready for prime time clinical use, I would think.

Very interesting article about diagnosing ovarian cancer.

Study: Ultrasound more accurate for assessing ovarian tumors A Belgian study found that ultrasound imaging using the pattern-recognition method is more accurate in detecting whether ovarian tumors are benign or malignant compared to blood tests that measure levels of CA-125, a tumor marker protein. Researchers said gynecologic ultrasound examiners should be given training and education in order to maximize the benefits of the technique. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
