Obesity linked to a virus

New research announced Monday found that when human stem cells were exposed to a common virus, they turned into fat cells.

While this may be a guilt-free explanation for putting on pounds -- 35 percent of Hoosier adults are overweight and about 28 percent are obese, according to 2006 federal stats -- it doesn't explain all or even most of America's growing obesity problem. But it adds to other evidence that blames expanding waistlines on more than supersized appetites. Researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the Louisiana State University system took fat tissue from people who had liposuction, removed adult stem cells from the tissue and exposed the cells to the virus, adenovirus-36, from a family of viruses that cause colds and pinkeye in people. More than half the stem cells exposed to the virus turned into fat cells and accumulated fats, while only a small percentage of the nonexposed stem cells did the same, said researcher Dr. Magdalena Pasarica, who presented the results Monday at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in Boston. If a viral cause of obesity can be confirmed, a vaccine could be developed to prevent the virus from making some people fat, said Nikhil Dhurandhar, who headed the research.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
