I appreciate your comments, and do not wish to be condescending in any way, shape, or form. Without laying blame on physicians or anesthesiologists or anyone else, for that matter, I'm simply curious about a 80-90% epidural rate. In my home birth service I heard women say more than once that their choice was about not being tempted by the analgesia available in the hospital. Essentially the women who talked about this said stuff like, "Well in the hospital, the candy store is open and I would be tempted to partake," or "I know that if I was offered analgesia in the hospital, especially during the later stages of labor, I would take it. Since I want to avoid drugs in labor I choose to stay away." Not everyone is like that, of course, but I still wonder if more women would feel more empowered to labor without if the melieu were different. I don't really think labor and tooth extraction can be compared---for me tooth extraction is worse, externally brought about and in the end there is no reward like a baby! :) Louana

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
