Re: CLIA testsFrom: ainsron (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Mon Apr 23 16:05:14 2007
CLIA does not impact on you ability to perform microscopy, only on your ability to bill for it. It is a waived test, proficiency testing is not required and all you have to do is pay their fee. You have to have separate certificates for physician performed microscopy and a certificate indicating which waived tests you are performing, i.e., UA, HCG, etc. They are two separate forms. On the application, you have to list which personnel will be performing the testing. It has nothing to do with quality of care or competence to perform the testing, it is simply another license fee imposed on top of the multitude of other fees we pay. Ronald E. Ainsworth, MD, FACOG -----Original Message----- From: ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net [mailto:ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net] On Behalf Of Henry Gregor Sent: Monday, April 23, 2007 1:33 PM To: Multiple recipients of list OB-GYN-L Subject: CLIA tests Listers Does anyone have any knowledge of how CLIA statutes impact on physician or other provider performed microscopy testing (specifically, slide fern tests for AF leakage)? By my reading of Section 493.2 of this act, it is a moderately difficult test that requires proficiency certification and documentation for non provider staff. It is unclear to me whether that also applies to physicians, PA's, NP's, MW's, etc. Comments appreciated. This may not be a thread of interest, so off list email is welcome. Also, the local hospital has determined it will not use AmniStat testing, noting that testing for amniotic fluid is a "screening" test for which it may or may not get reimbursed. Is there experience in that regard out there among the group? Seems to me its a diagnostic test, but hey, I'm no insurance provider. Thanks in advance. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
