CytotecFrom: Richard Chudacoff (rchudacoff@mylinuxisp.com)Mon Apr 9 13:30:42 2007
I moved to a new hospital in Las Vegas. They won't let us use Cytotec orally, because it can't be washed out. However, we all know that after 20 minutes you can't wash it out vaginally, either. Not a big deal as the nurses are allowed to put it in vaginally, but here is the problem. They use GENERIC Cytotec (I guess at $0.50 a pill it was too much). Since we know that generics can have a little as 80% and as much as 120% of the active ingredient as the brand name, and since we now that the active ingredient is not evenly distributed throughout the pill, cutting the pill to get a 25 microgram dose seems totally inconsistent with following an established protocol as described in the literature. Here we have a chance of as little as 15 or as high as 35 mcg but at a 50 mcg dose we can be as low as 30 or as high as 70mcg. Am I figuring this out wrong or could we be headed for disaster by using generic pills?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
