For a period, I think early '80's, the Gyn community here was taking out way more than our share of intra-abdominal Cu-7s. It was in vogue, by FPs here, to put them in soon after delivery--3 or 4 weeks post-partum. I was referred one of these ladies at about 7 weeks post partum by a FP who did not find the strings on her 6 week pp check. He did a flat plate x-ray and the Cu-7 was clearly seen and read by the radiologist as being "Extra-uterine IUD just anterior to the fundus"--on both A-P and lateral films. I scheduled the patient for laparoscopic removal of the Cu-7. At laparoscopy a week later I could not find the IUD anywhere. More x-rays done on the table both A-P and cross-table laterals did not reveal the IUD. The patient on awakening was upset at the "un-necessary surgery." She, of course, denied seeing the passed IUD. She threatened to sue and my insurance carrier settled for $7K. Lesson learned: Never operate for removal of a foreign object unless and until you prove that the object is still in situ immediately before she goes into the O.R. Gerald P. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
