I am at the Contraceptive Technology Conference now and the IUC speakers all stated that they can be expelled easily and she needs to be checked about 10 weeks after insertion to make sure the string is visible. If the patient does not check for the string, she may expell it with a heavy period. We had a hands on with the various types and they are so flexible, I can see why they would not feel it. Garry:

Why do you think she couldn't have expelled it? I'd do a flat plate (much cheaper, simpler than CT, and will give you the same info). If it's in the belly, consider laparoscopy, but it might be tough to find - you might want to do it with fluoro available. If it's not there, she expelled it.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
