Basic levelsFrom: Henry Gregor (henrygregor@yahoo.com)Wed Mar 14 20:44:18 2007

Kennedy give a well attended and politely received address at an ACOG Annual Clinical meeting in Boston. He espoused support for a basic level of care for all, with options available to allow additional coverages, by covered individuals' choices and willingness to pay with extra premiums for their choices. (Analogous to purchasing extra levels of coverage above basic renters or homeowners policy coverage limits.) He used the example of a Cheverolet coverage for all, and Cadillac coverage for those who wanted to purchase it. Sadly, neither he nor many other pols have actually worked toward that call. Former Speaker Tip O'Neill railed against "broken promises" to the America's citizens and made sure no means tests or differential options would be considered ... all clothed in the usual politcal hypocrisy of protecting the people's rights and preventing any broken promises ...so that's why we've all seen folks riding in the back of limos, or living in the gated communities, getting the same care, at the costs (basically pocket change for them in many instances) as the folks driving the limos, or cleaning the houses, or serving meals at the tony restaurants, or maintaining the golf courses...well, you know how I ramble and get cynical...not to say I'm disgusted with the process or anything. Years later, I read with interest some of the restrictions (read poison pills) Sen Kennedy put into the first efforts to evaluate health savings accounts...not that they are necessarily the answer. But I did read one comment of his to the effect that he was not going to stand by and see a system get separated into various tiers of coverage for different groups...not very consistent with what I heard in Boston. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
