Different energy form, less lateral spread, hand or foot activiation. Here's the information from their website:

Permanently fuses vessels up to and including 7 mm in diameter and tissue bundles without dissection or isolation

Provides a unique combination of pressure and energy to create vessel fusion An optimized combination of pressure and energy creates the seal by melting the collagen and elastin in the vessel walls and reforming it into a permanent, plastic-like seal. It does not rely on a proximal thrombus.

Feedback-controlled response system automatically discontinues energy delivery when the seal cycle is complete, eliminating the guesswork When the instrument determines the seal is complete, a tone sounds and output to the handpiece is automatically discontinued.

Reduces thermal spread Minimizes thermal spread to approximately 2 mm for most LigaSureT instruments; average thermal spread is less than 1 mm when using the LigaSure PreciseT instrument and approximately 1.5 mm when using the LigaSureT V instrument.

Unique energy output results in virtually no sticking or charring

A clinical study demonstrated that seals withstand 3x normal systolic blood pressure

I have never had a problem with charring, probably because I often irrigate while I am cooking the tissue. Additionally I like the sound (which is very much like the old Kleppinger/Wolf system) which gives you an audible endpoint for completed desiccation. That was the trouble with the simple bipolar forcep which had to be "eyeballed" as to the end of desiccation.

I have not used the Ligasure - how different is it from Gyrus?

I prefer the Ligasure. I like the hand activation, rather than another foot

sometimes stick if the pedicle charred.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
