Gotta remember, however, that the fund itself (good example is the Dalkon Shielf fund) "builds" its own bureaucracy (including, mirabili dictu, LAWYERS) and actually DEFENDS itself against payouts. So the patients, in the long run, probably suffer as much or more than with the current system. You basically end up with a virtual insurance company, trying greedily not to "lose" money (which is not really theirs to begin with, but they feel like it is and try not to let go of it). In Louisiana, our Patient Compensation Fund, set up to pay the top $400,000 of our malpractice award limits (the doctor is limited to $100,000) is often at odds with doctors regarding settlements, payments, etc., and definitely against prevailing patients for payments which should be forthcoming. Whoever HAS the money, wants to KEEP the money. Joe P.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
