Re: Vaginal dryness in a 17-year-oldFrom: Raymond Stephen (stephen.raymond@dhhs.tas.gov.au)Wed Jul 26 20:33:23 2006
The progestagenic fraction of the patch is probably responsible. There are some who get quite a lot of atrophy from progestational agents in the OC and I would feel confident that that is the mechanism here; especially as the particular progestational agent here is a metabolite of norgestimate which is quite potent. One of them saw a 17-yr-old with cc of vag dryness, interfering with intercourse. Clinically dry on exam also. She has regular menses, no other indicators of estrogen deficiency. Wt. 230. She is on Ortho-Evra for past 2 years. Have any of you ever seen this in a young woman? Is the patch causing it? Anna Meenan, MD

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
