Gail,

Why did your mother's doctor not explain all this with her prior to her surgery?? I know your country doesn't have the same issues with informed consent that we have here in the states. However, when she was diagnosed, her doctor should have told her about the different treatments available to her and why he was recommending a mastectomy.

She should go back to the surgeon now and get all her questions answered, as well as the availability of reconstruction. Maybe people your mum knows had a much smaller tumor as well. I hope she now knows the importance of breast self exam monthly on her other breast! I diagnosed my tumor, despite 2 normal mammograms 8 months apart!

It might also help your mum to join a listserv for breast cancer survivors-I'm on one and it offers tremendous support for BC survivors all over the world. It's called _bosombuds@yahoogroups.com_ (mailto:bosombuds@yahoogroups.com)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
