Congress examines hospital accreditation

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has been asked to provide Congress with substantial information on its hospital accreditation process. The congressional request follows a July 2004 Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigation that found serious deficiencies in JCAHO's accreditation process. The GAO is currently conducting a second investigation on possible conflicts of interest and other concerns at JCAHO and its subsidiaries. In addition to the request for information about the hospital accreditation process, Congress has asked for detailed information about the JCAHO's relationship with Joint Commission Resources, Inc., its consulting subsidiary.

Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), and Representative Peter Stark (D-CA) plan to introduce a revised version of legislation they sponsored in 2004 that would bring JCAHO's accreditation process under the authority of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
