Re: Amish/Mennonite clientsFrom: Meenan, Anna, Kevin (annam@uic.edu)Tue Apr 11 15:42:13 2006
Ina May sees a lot of Amish clients at her birth center. They tend to be anxious to avoid interventions because they have no health insurance and pay for everything out of pocket. They also, of course, decline to use most modern technology. OTOH, they also tend not to sue for bad outcomes and are more accepting of babies that are not "perfect". They also tend to have lots of babies. I read a book written by a family doc who worked with Amish ladies for several years. The book is called "Dr. Frau: A Woman Doctor Among the Amish" by Grace H. Kaiser. It was a fascinating book. There are a LOT of cultural differences. I was surprised. There are also some stories of Amish births in "Spiritual Midwifery". Anna Meenan, MD

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
