At our practice , a patient can go 'AMA' at any time, but if they do they are sent a certified return receipt letter stating why we are giving them 2 weeks to find another provider. "If they do not trust our medical judgement in this situation, then it is to their advantage to find another provider who they are comfortable with." Legally- according to EMTELA, if she comes in laboring, we have to take care of her, but it is a little bit of coverage for our rear ends if something goes south. We had a case about 5 years ago- a patient that was a train wreck waiting to happen anyway- who went AMA, had a stroke at home and sued the hosp, doc etc. That doc is now out of practice because of his insurance rates. But you have to remember that I am from West Virginia where people think a law suit against a doc is the same as a paycheck. They are very 'sue happy' here. Vicki- Vicki Smith, CNM, MSN

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
