From what I understand, 6 maternal deaths have now been attributed to vaginal use of misoprostol (my sources are NPR driving home from work last night, and this morning's Arizona Republic newspaper) Ingrid, the article I read was related to the vaginal use of RU-486 for abortion. It stated that some clinics recommended that the final 2 pills be inserted vaginally rather than taken orally. This is an off label use and not approved by the FDA. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
