Re: Antibiotics and timing of surgeryFrom: doctorjoe@aol.comFri Mar 17 13:54:45 2006
I think we're getting confused. There's SURGICAL prophylaxis, and then there's neonatal GROUP B STREP prophylaxis. Depends on which you're doing. We've been talking about GBS, but this is not the same thing, with the Kefzol and all. The standard is within one hour of the incision. The big exception to this is the c-section. Most of us give 1 gram kefzol at cord clamp. This is done at the request of pediatrics. Is anyone on the list giving the antibiotics prior to incision for "better" prophylaxis? S. Osterling M.D. California

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
