Re: NYT: Silent Struggle: A New Theory of PregnancyFrom: Terrence.Jones@kp.orgTue Mar 14 16:20:21 2006
This is a multipart message in MIME format. --=_alternative 00802C9088257131_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" As with the mythical counterpart, fetal microchimerism has more than one side (the original chimera had three parts: lion, goat, and serpent). There may well be prolongation of heterograft survival and enhanced healing, but there are also associations with autoimmune phenomena (systemic sclerosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and autoimmune thyroid dis. Maternal-fetal microchimerism can be associated with juvenile myositis and, in Mom's with SLE, congenital heart block (from maternal cardiac myocytes) [Sarkar & Miller, Autoimmune Rev (2004), 3:454-63]. Tho it probably IS time to dismiss the idea of a Bellerophon upon Pegasus, racing to save the day from such a monster; and see the situation more like chimera's sister, the Sphinz - at times a riddler, at times a teacher. Still much to learn (Artlett (10/2005), Clin Chem Acta, 360:1-8). /tj PS: Just wait a few years, when that Daughter is racing ahead of You down Pinball, on Her snowboard! The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
