Leopold maneuvers describes the movements used for manual palpation of the abdomen to determine fetal presentation. Leopold's Maneuvers First Maneuver (Upper pole) Examiner faces woman's head Palpate uterine fundus Determine what fetal part is at uterine fundus Second Maneuver (Sides of maternal abdomen) Examiner faces woman's head Palpate with one hand on each side of abdomen Palpate fetus between two hands Assess which side is spine and which extremities Third Maneuver (Lower pole) Examiner faces woman's feet Palpate just above symphysis pubis Palpate fetal presenting part between two hands Assess for Fetal Descent Fourth Maneuver (Presenting part evaluation) Examiner faces woman's head Apply downward pressure on uterine fundus Hold presenting part between index finger and thumb Assess for cephalic versus Breech Presentation It gives a name to what you are trained to do and intuitively do every time you examine an OB patient. And the vertex of Wednesday last week in the G4P3 turned out to be a breech today. And both of you have just given me heartburn, because I was taught to palpate the presenting part abdominally - which is a whole lot easier. Steve Besides, what's "Leopold's"?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
