Excuse my ignorance- could you state what 2X RR VTE stands for, please?

I'm on Ortho's speaker's bureau. The bottom line is that despite the new info about a 60% higher average blood level with Evra than with OCs, there is NO data confirming an increased risk of any side effect.

In conjunction with the FDA, Ortho has sponsored several epidemiologic studies. One is now in press, and, to summarize, shows no difference in VTE between Evra and a 35 mcg pill. A second study, equally well done, not yet published, apparently shows an increase from 1-2/10,000 VTE with OC to 2-4 /10,000 with Evra. This is a RR of ~2, but an absolute risk of 1-2/10,000 patients (very low, IMHO). Also, it should be noted that other current contraceptives have significant warnings in their package inserts:

Seasonale - significantly higher bleeding rates Yasmin - ?problems with K+ due to spironolactone like effect NuvaRing - 2X RR VTE

The fact remains that all of these hormonal contraceptives are very safe, probably none any safer or more dangerous significantly than any other, and ALL much safer than pregnancy!!!!!!

Waiting for the flames :)

The nice Ortho rep brought in a lunch today to talk about the bad rap Evra has gotten, yet it is (according to him) the most prescribed hormonal contraceptive in the US.

Has anyone changed their habits regarding this since the poop has hit the fan, i.e. the FDA made Ortho change the labeling and some brouhaha about strokes? Has anyone seen the science on it?

Garry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
