permits me to care for women in their homes or in hospital or to work independently on my own when women with a previos section can be cared for at home. For those who pay an independent midwife there is no barrier to her having a home birth in fact that's why they choose them over the NHS.

Yes. If we could imagine the best care system, at least for me, combining what US and UK midwives do would be part of it -- actual out of hospital birth options available in the health care system, as you have. More continuity of care, which is problematic for you all as it can be for us. Practice based on evidence. We'd continue to be primary care providers across the life span. Change the dominant medical paradigm to actually treat women's bodies and life changes as normal, not medicalize them. Merge MANA and ACNM into one independent midwifery profession, separate from nursing and medicine, reconnecting us with our original historical roots as midwives. Universal access to health care would be the other part of an ideal system. But then there's that pesky legal system, and the malpractice insurers ... (falling back to earth).

Grace just a nurse dreaming, as usual

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
