Gee, another thing or two you learn by going through medical school and residency

You know sarcasm is the lowest for of wit. I am a MIDWIFE not an obstetrician. As a MIDWIFE I am expert in normal, low risk pregnancy and childbirth. I know how to detect deviations form the norm but by the time women get to me on the birthing unit they've already been seen by a doc if they're high risk or by a community midwife if they're low risk. I'm never there preconception so I don't know why a woman needs a pelvic exam as a matter of course. Of course I could draw my own conclusions and that is you don't trust women to grow their babies and then give birth to them without prodding and poking them. Right? And we never give women pre labour vaginal exams so I ask again, what are you looking for? On another list women are being told at 39 weeks (sigh) that their cervix is not opening, better schedule a section!

I'll await the flack that will undoubtedly follow. Bring it on, I haven't had a good debate in ages!

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
