It is Federal law that restricts prescriptions to the signsture of a physician. States cannot change this. Barr Labs petitioned FDA for a change int the rule to allow OTC. It was denied because the Bush Adm opposed it on the grounds that it would encourage minor girls to have sex. Same issue on morning after pill.Currently the request is before the FDA to allow OTC Rx of BCP's to women over 18 without Rx. It is being ipposed by gyn's who want MATERNALISM IN THE CONTROL OF THEIR PTS such as not allowing them to go to AMCO to get their MMG as they do for their transmissions in an effort to avoid the GM (MD?) dealers. sAm

Now is that not odd, keeping in mind that BCP are about to become "over the counter" in some states?

Where? I have heard of EC being OTC (Gail: Emergency Contraception) or more commonly "pharmacist available" .. but not Birth Control pills as yet? Laurie in ME

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
