I like to see those who niggle in latent phase (>20 hours in primip) given therapeutic rest with morphine for a diagnosis of prolonged prodromal labor. In my experience, they tend to follow the rule of thirds. One third will awake in active labor, 4-5 cm. dilated, and progress normally without further intervention. One third will awake no longer in labor at all and can comfortably await the onset of effective labor. One third will continue to niggle. These are the ones I would augment, now that they've had a good sleep and are ready to approach labor well rested. Cheri

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
