Re: Breast cancer/GailFrom: GIN11153@aol.comSat Oct 29 01:50:38 2005
My scenario is almost the same as your mom's. I had my annual mammo 1/04, read as normal by the breast radiologist and my hubby(general surgeon)-was on mini doses of generic estrogen and progresterone (1/2 tab 3 times a week) since 5/03 for hot flashes. I have examined myself every 4-6 weeks for 10+ years. 8/04 noticed 1" x 1 1/2 " skin indentation . Didn't feel anything unusual but checked daily. Three weeks later, felt a pea sized lump while lying down on my side-told hubby. He couldn't feel it but we went for another mammo 8/17-nothing unusual seen and matched the 1/04 mammo. Radiologist did an immediate ultrasound and it showed up like the sun, a 1.5 mm irregular tumor. 9/2 lumpectomy and sentinel node showed invasive ductal carcinoma with the 3 nodes removed clean. Both estrogen and progesterone markers were positive-am convinced that the 14 months of hormone therapy gave me breast cancer-no other risk factors here. Had 8 weeks of radiation and now am 10 months into the 5 year course of Arimidex. How big was your mom's tumor? Was the estrogen and progesterone marker positive or negative? Those are big factors in prognosis and treatment to discuss with your mom's doctors. Mammograms miss up to 20% of tumors-well known fact, so it happened to your mom just like my case and lots of others. Monthly breast self exam is a must for all women over age 20, as is an annual clinical breast exam and not using hormones!!. You should discuss her white cell count with her oncologist. Sometimes they have to stop chemo to allow the white count to recover. I imagine that your Mom is going to be on Arimidex due to being postmenopausal. More expensive than Tamoxifen but has been found through research to decrease the reoccurrence rate by about 40%!! Arimidex is not used for estrogen/progesterone negative tumors though so I assume your mom's was positive. I hope your mom will be OK. There's no way to know the future but hope for the best. Lots of information online at breastcancer.org, the Susan Komen website, etc. Hugs to you and your mom.
