I certainly agree with Lynn but be sure you have an appt that day or the next AM so that you can see them at their nearest avail. Terrible to call and then tell them to come in next week! sAm

Do you:

1. Call the patient with the result? If so, do you or your staff call?

**I have faced this a lot with all the amnios I perform. I don't like to give news over the phone. When given bad news, people tend to not hear much else of what you say, but I find this to be less the fact when the news is imparted face-to-face. As for who makes the call, I tend to have my nurse call and ask that the patient come in to talk. This precludes getting into a big discussion on the phone. As you state, patients obviously know something is up when you ask them to come in, but I am so much more comfortable with the face-to-face.

**What I have always found fascinating are the diverse responses seen. Understandably, all are very upset and distraught, but some actually get very angry. I had one father almost put his fist through one of my oak doors.

**One of my best friend's mother had a message left on her answering machine by the physician himself that her breast biopsy was malignant... Lynn

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
