Merck Found Liable, as Jurors Award $253 Million in Nation's First Vioxx Trial A Texas jury today found pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. liable for the death of a man who took the once-popular painkiller Vioxx. Jurors awarded Robert Ernst's widow, Carol, $253.4 million in damages. The case drew national attention from pharmaceutical companies, lawyers, consumers, stock analysts and arbitragers as a signal of what lies ahead for Merck. Merck said it plans to appeal.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
