Plug her personal data into a Gail Model Calculator and you can give her some indication of risk: Age (model valid only for ages >35 yr) Age at menarche Age at first live birth Number of first-degree relatives with breast cancer Number of previous breast biopsies Atypical hyperplasia on any previous breast biopsy Race* You can find one at this site: http://www.halls.md/breast/risk.htm HRT is not contraindicated simply because of a FH of breast CA, but you need to counsel her about the increased risks documented by WHI. She is on ethinyl estradiol and prometrium daily for 4 years and her hot flushes have disappeared. Her 49 year old premenopausal sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. There is no family history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer. Should we stop the HRT/ What is her risk of breast cancer with and without the HRT? Geoffrey Kalchman Mt Sinai Hospital Toronto ON

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
