Re: Contraceptive accessFrom: Anna Meenan, MD (annam@uic.edu)Fri Apr 22 17:14:02 2005
Almost all pharmacists in this country are employees, and average wages run $60,000-$65,000 a year, with higher salaries on the coasts than in the South and Midwest. They make about what the average high school principal makes, less in some areas. There is currently a shortage of trained Pharmacists in the US, so pressure on salaries is in the upwards direction. However, because of the shortage, they are also busier and more stressed, and work a lot of overtime, for which they are not always compensated. Pharmacists don't necessarily just push a box of pills accross the counter. Here they are required to provide education on use of the drug and side effects, and they frequently get questions from patients who don't want to "bother" their doctor. They are also required to spend a lot of time trying to sort out the myriad formularies that our Americal insurance companies have created, call doctors to get medications changed when the formulary changes, explain the new medication to the patient, et. I know some pharmacists, and none of them drives a vehicle as nice as your truck, el.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
