I've treated 2 that I presumed were monilial mastitis in the past 3 years with exactly that same regimen. They usually have a "stabbing glass" kind of pain in their breast. The ones that I have treated did get better.

Listers,

I have a subject that I haven't seen addressed here before. I think the hospital's lactation consultants must have recently gone to a conference and now are telling everybody that gets mastitis symptoms that they have monilial mastitis. Now I am not talking about cutaneous yeast in the mother and/or thrush in the baby. I am talking about mastitis where there is supposed colonization of the ducts, etc. From what I am able to gather, this real diagnosis is hard to make, not to mention the treatment costs - if one uses diflucan, the cost is about $250 (Loading dose of 400 mg, followed by 200 mg daily for 10-14 days).

How often are y'all seeing this or making this diagnosis? I have to be honest, prior to the recent onslaught here, I haven't treated a monilial mastitis in 17 years of practice.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
