Re: hemochromatosisFrom: Anna Meenan, MD (annam@uic.edu)Sun Jan 23 14:20:34 2005
She probably will need to have a consultation with a perinatologist, as the fetus preferentially absorbs iron from the mom, who is absorbing excessive amounts because of the hemochromatosis. There have been cases of neonatal iron overload reported, but I have no idea what her risk would be. The phlebotomy would not be expected to harm the fetus, and I would guess she needs to continue those. I have cared for non-pregnant patients with hemochromatosis, but never a pregnant one (that I know of, though with an incidence of 1/300 in caucasians, I wouldn't be surprised if I had and didn't know it). I would guess that she's been told to avoid high-iron foods and iron-containing vitamin supplements already.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
