It would be an interesting study to rate the post-procedure discomfort after marsupialization versus Word catheter placement. (Of course, finding patients with bilateral Bartholin gland cysts so you could randomize might be kind of difficult). I perceive Word catheters as more uncomfortable, because even though you tuck them into the vagina, the ends tend to fall out, which may cause a pulling sensation. Either procedure should work fine. Unfortunately, many emergency room folks just incise and drain the cyst, which increases the chance of recurrence.
