In general, "local" anesthesia is not covered separately, although "Regional" anesthesia, including a paracervical block (obviously not applicable here) is covered. I don't do circs - could this be considered a regional anesthetic????

Here's a coding question.

For neonatal circumcision, CPT 54150, does anyone who administers local anesthesia (i.e. Ring Block or Dorsal Penile Nerve Block) also code for the actual administration of the anesthestic?

One Ob group has been doing so.

My interpretation from the CPT guidelines is that local anesthesia is included in the procedure. This is stated in the paragraphs in the introduction to the "surgery" section.

That said, there is an anesthesia code, 00920, for Anesthesia for procedures on the male genitalia, not otherwise listed.

Any thoughts?

Coders, if lurking, please chime in or email privately.

Garry

PS--Dear anti-circumcision people:

Please do not respond on the list, or privately. My spam blocker will get you privately :), but it will let the coders through :).

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
