Prophylactic oophorectomyFrom: Dr. Ainsworth (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Thu Sep 30 23:17:17 2004
I currently have a 41 yo multigravida who is a scheduled RCS. She has an extremely strong family history of premenopausal breast cancer - mother, two maternal aunts and maternal greatgrandmother. To her knowledge, none of them have been tested for BRCA genes. She will be talking to a genetic counsellor during this pregnancy and I told her to discuss the subject and consider testing. If she tests positive, would it be reasonable to offer her prophylactic oophorectomy at the time of RCS? Seems like a reasonable option to me, however we all know how exaggerated the blood flow is through the ovarian vessels and parametrial veins during late pregnancy and that could increase the risks of surgery at that time.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
