Re: Pap/Mammogram Result NotificationFrom: DMECNM@aol.comThu Sep 2 21:47:52 2004

Medical legally, if you can document you sent a letter that something was abnormal, you are on much more solid ground than a phone call. I see your point but I think that getting a letter to say that something was abnormal is a bit impersonal. I think that most our patients would get upset that we didn't call them with the results immediately. I can't tell you how many times a patient gets an UTZ, xray, lab test, etc on Monday morning and they call Monday afternoon wanting to know what the results were. Since many of the abnormals require some kind of follow up appointment (colpo, UTZ, or more labs) these appointments are usually made at the time of the initial phone call. I think it would be hard for the patient to say she never got the phone call when I have an appointment scheduled for her for follow up. Then again, patients can say anything they want, I guess. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
