Re: GYN: IUD removalFrom: Braun, R. Daniel (rbraun@iupui.edu)Wed Aug 25 00:52:27 2004
Prevention of implantation is about the third mechanism that occurs. As you mentioned Mirena may prevent ovulation but al IUCD's mainly work by prevention of conception. They make the endometrial cavity very hostile to the sperm sop they never get to the ovum to fertilize it. Dan R. Daniel Braun, MD "If everyone likes you, you're doing something wrong." However, a Mirena probably also prevents ovulation as well. It is just possible that if a fertilisation were to occur the night or two before removal, implantation could still follow in the hours after removal if the timing were just right. After all it can be up to 7 days between fertilisation and implantation. art fougner, md wrote:

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
