They should be drawn from the artery - they are the most accurate information regarding the newborn acid-base status. A ph below 7.0 with a metabolic pattern will is usually associated with severe neurologic dysfunction... I do cord gases to all my deliveries - I have been questioned - and rightly, so - that such practice is not EBM - but it is my convictiont that eventually it will be -- It helps the pediatricians a lot -- and it is an objective assessment of the fetal status -
