Pitocin administration

Our pharmacy director recently notified the ob unit that the nurses will no longer mix pitocin for routine use, such as inductions. In an emergency they can still add it to an IV (fortunately!). And of course, at night when the pharmacist is not in house, they can still mix pitocin for inductions. He states that is a JCAHO requirement for safe administration of all IV admixtures. Many of our nurses are not happy about the change because of the time involved in obtaining medications from the pharmacy once they have been ordered and many of these nurses have been doing ob nursing for 20+ years and feel uncomfortable relenquishing this responsibility. Are other hospitals in the US having similar changes from their pharmacies?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
