Joanne those recommedations are based on cost effectivness and are defintely not as safe as yearly PAP smears, the data was presented on ACOG's own site about six months ago, for example women who stop having PAP smears in there six decade because all they prevoius PAP's were normal will have twice the incidence of invasive cancer compared to women who continue yeary PAP's but the incidence is still so low to make it cost effective. Basically if a patient asks me if it is just as safe to forgoe yearly PAP's after 65 or any age for that mater I tell them that it is not as safe but it is cheaper. Those recomendations are not foolproof I have had a case of invasive cervical cancer in a 18 y.o. which according to the databases is unheard of.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
