MeningitisFrom: Joanne Bulley, MD (islesannie@yahoo.com)Mon Dec 29 19:50:05 2003
We have had a rather *interesting* & sobering week here in SW NH - four cases of meningococcal meningitis of 15-18 yo's with one death. She was found unresponsive by her parents on Christmas day. At the pre-college gyn exam many of my teens come in - to renew their OCPs before college - I almost always talk with her about never putting down her cup at a party - don't drink from anyone else's and don't borrow tooth brushes etc. I have recommended the above to help prevent the slipping of date rape drugs and for the meningitis. I have a friend who is a college doc (Amherst College and U Mass - Amherst) who gets a few cases most years - usually after teh beer bashes and shared cups - picking up cups off the flor when cups run out etc. Do any of you have othere things in particular you tell these young women? Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
