Re: Counseling-offended at your postFrom: Braun, R. Daniel (rbraun@iupui.edu)Mon Oct 13 06:32:09 2003
Most general surgeons, Male or Female, would not feel comfortable asking about sexual histories. They have not had the training or experience to do so. I did not try to say that males should not be counseling and I'm sorry if it came out that way. Unfortunately, as you must know, many women are more comfortable discussing certain things with a female. I am not being biased at all. Many of my friends and nursing peers will only go to OB/GYNs who are female. A few people I know have gone to places like Planned Parenthood for situations such as this and they told me the counselors and NPs were all female also. I personally have never gone to a female OB/GYN and I am sorry if my post seemed to imply that male doctors could not do proper counseling. I meant that this patient in particular might need a female to feel more comfortable in discussing this overpowering boyfriend who might be emotionally or physically abusing her. My husband is a general surgeon who doesn't feel comfortable when needing to ask a patient about sexual histories and I'm sorry if you thought I was implying that you felt the same. Again, my apologies as I did not mean to offend you or anyone else. Gail Neuman RNC CPHW LNC certified high risk OB/legal consultant listowner of LegalNurseConsulting@yahoogroups.com Tustin, CA

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
